Tangier Island Virginia is located 12 miles west of the historical waterfront community of Onancock Virginia on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. A different way of life; absolutely.  Tangier Island residents have no vehicles to travel about on the Island. Transportation on the Island consists of Golf Carts and Bikes.  Visitors can rent  bikes at Tangier Dock upon arriving on the Island. As far as golf carts, ask when you call for reservations at your local bed and breakfasts.  Tangier Islanders take pride in their Chesapeake Bay heritage and have maintained a simpler way of life to some.  On the other hand, lifestyles of Tangier Island are diminishing due to the waterman of the Chesapeake Bay struggling today to keep alive working the waters of the Chesapeake Bay. Due to tight regulations and restrictions placed by the Commonwealth of Virginia many Tangier Island youths will have to seek employment off of Tangier Island, as independent Tangiermen working the waters of the Chesapeake Bay is much different from days gone by.

Life on Tangier Island is quiet and serene, residents are warm and friendly.  Tangier Island, itself, is a nature's wonderland.  Visiting Tangier Island is stepping back in time.  The atmosphere is tranquil, and the Chesapeake Bay breeze that blows offers sweet memories as you travel throughout the Island.

     Yes, Captain Pruitt is a native Tangierman  as well as Shirley's Bay View Inn Host, Kathy Crockett  "Freddie K" has sons who are watermen of the Chesapeake Bay and Wallace worked on the tugs of the Chesapeake Bay before upgrading his homeplace and creating the complex at the Tangier Island Bay View Inn.

And, Willie Crockett is a well know Tangierman for his artwork, sculpture, and poetry.  His honest portrayals of the Chesapeake Bay through is artwork is know internationally.  At any given day, ("except when the fishing is right on the Bay" according to Willie) you can find him at his studio and art gallery  in Onancock Virginia.  Many visitors enjoy stopping in the Studio & Gallery  just to meet this world renown wildlife artist.....

There is easy access to Tangier Island.  Small aircraft can land at the air-strip on Tangier Island and access is available daily by passenger boat from Onancock, Virginia and Crisfield, Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay's lower Eastern Shore.
